There's the notorious example of the corpse of Pope Formosus (d. 897?)
being dug up, "tried" posthumously by his successor, and after the "guilty"
verdict, being thrown into the Tiber. (His corpse was recovered and
reburied.)
Formosus had an interesting pre-Papacy career -- missionary to the Bulgars,
active in the running cold war of the time between the pro-Byzantium faction
in Rome and the pro-Italy faction. Maybe I'm oversimplifying.
I haven't been able to find a lot in English on this period. 'm currently a
monoglot in the process of brushing off my German in preparation for
some further study in that language, and I'm planning on a copy of
Wheelock (for Latin) in the near future.) I do have the book "Rome in
the Dark Ages" (Peter Llewellyn) thanks to a local public
library book sale: some kind person had it priced for less than a dollar!
