medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Jim,
Thanks for your additional information about "the walls of Chartres", i. e.
the charter of count Theo.
> (Bishop Peter held the see from 1180-1183) ... Lepinois and Merlet give
the dates as 1181-83, fwiw
The former confusion about the beginning of Peter's late career as bishop of
Chartres is partially caused by disregarding the easter style in some
documents . Peter's predecessor, John of Salisbury, had died on 25 October
1180. Meinert shows that Peter was still abbott of Saint-Remi on 15 march
1181 (modern style) and had been replaced by 5 May, either 1182 or 1183
(modern style; see Meinert, Papsturkunden in Frankreich, bullae nr 188 and
213).
Kind regards
W. Robl
