Dear Colleagues,
The North African Seismological Group (NASG) and IGCP457
Organize "The
3rd International Workshop on Seismic Risk in North Africa"
There were many devastating earthquakes that have shaken northern
Africa and/or the whole Mediterranean area. Such events have forced
us
to re-think about preparedness and mitigation measures as well as
disaster management as a whole. It has pointed out our limitations in
relief and rescue operations, lack of proper design to resist
earthquake forces, poor quality of constructions, lack of
administrative and legislative measures, problem of upgrading of
existing buildings, dissemination of technical knowledge and
awareness
about earthquake resistant constructions, etc. The main objective of
this workshop is to establish a platform for researchers in all
disciplines, professionals, planners and decision makers concerned
with earthquake risk reduction. It is well accepted nowadays that
scientists in all disciplines and decision makers must share
intimately the advances of science and technology for an adequate
and
effective mitigation of the impact of earthquakes on human being and
his properties including the cultural heritage.
The 3rd International Workshop on Seismic Risk in North Africa will
be
held at the Geology Department, Mansoura University (Egypt) during
April 23-27, 2003. Two meetings of similar nature have been held
since 1999 in an interval of two years. Such meetings have made
significant impact on education, research and developmental activities
in the field of tectonics and Earthquake Engineering. This coming
meeting in the series, is going to be very significant in view of
recent spurt in the Earthquake activity in the area. The devastating
1992 earthquakes of Cairo (Egypt), 1980 El-Asnam (Algeria) and
1960
Agadir (Morocco) have once again highlighted the urgent need to
establish strategies not only to enhance our knowledge on active
tectonics and earthquake resistant constructions but also to ensure
that the knowledge be used by the end users.
The following themes have been identified for the workshop:
* Seismotectonic
* Gravity, Magnetic and Paleomagnetic
* Strong Ground Motion and Site Effects
* Earthquake Hazard and Risk Assessments
* Vulnerability Estimation
* Seismic Building Codes and Regulations
* Public Awareness
* Earthquakes and Cultural Heritage
* Human Responses and Socio-Economic
Issues
