Dear all
There have been a couple of occasions recently when members have
posted messages to Geo-tectonics with large file attachments. As I've
pointed out before, this isn't a good idea but, also, isn't necessary.
Why isn't it a good idea? - 1. Many members of the list attach to the
Internet via a dial up line. Downloading large files (especially if they
turn out to be of no interest to them) is both inconvenient and
expensive. 2. Members who have a fast link can still be
inconvenienced by excessively large messages as they may well have
a disc quota that limits the size of their inboxes.
Why isn't it necessary? - 1. The information is often available
elsewhere, on a web page for example, and all that is needed is for
the URL to be communicated to members. 2. If there is no easy,
alternative source, the Geo-tectonics list has a file storage area
accessible to all members that can be used for virtually any purpose.
Anyone who wants to make use of this facility should contact me
directly.
Please think before sending a message with attachments and check
the file size before clicking that send button.
Cheers
John Whalley, List owner.
