Dear all,
The following specifications are intended as a guide for Harry
to tweak his XSLT scripts to generate the simplified set of
term documentation pages we agreed to on this list several
weeks ago. Makx is pushing for an official publication date
of February 7.
Note that the "Complete Historical Record" page will be
mentioned on the Web page but not given any prominence.
Please let me know if any of you spot any errors or omissions.
Tom

Title: Roadmap to Documentation of DCMI Metadata Terms
Description: This page provides an overview of official documentation
on DCMI metadata terms.

Text under the graphic:
The document "DCMI Metadata Terms -- Complete Current
Overview" is a one-stop source of up-to-date information
on all types of terms maintained by the Dublin Core
Metadata Initiative -- Elements, Element Refinements,
Encoding Schemes, and Controlled-Vocabulary Terms [1].
By popular demand, the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set
[2] and the DCMI Type Vocabulary [3] -- sub-sets of the
complete set of DCMI metadata terms -- are also maintained
as separate documents.
Users with specialized needs will find complete historical
versioning details about DCMI metadata terms on the
additional Web page "DCMI Metadata Terms -- Complete
Historical Record" [4].

Maintenance:
The DCMI Web Team should create and maintain this page
(and its graphic) in collaboration with the Usage Board.
In practice, this means the file should be made available
to Tom through CVS.

GENERATED TERM DOCUMENTATION PAGES
------------------------------------------------------------------------
As described on the Roadmap page above, the following four pages
will be periodically generated:

Algorithm for generating:
Include header file "header.dcmi-terms.xml".
Include all term declarations (in shortened form) that
have not been replaced by subsequent versions.
Redirects:
Redirects should not point directly to this page, but to
the Roadmap page (http://dublincore.org/resources/roadmap/)
as described above.

Master data files
The following three master data files should continue to be
maintained in the directory http://dublincore.org/usage/xml
for maintenance via CVS by the Usage Board (i.e., by Tom):
elements.xml
schemes.xml
types.xml
Header files
The following four header files should be maintained
in the same sub-directory as the master data files
(http://dublincore.org/usage/xml) for maintenance via
CVS by the Usage Board (i.e., by Tom):
header.dcmi-terms.xml
header.dces.xml
header.dcmi-type-vocabulary.xml
header.history.xml
Maintenance and versioning of term documentation pages
These documents will be updated as often as necessary --
which will be frequently when we start approving Encoding
Scheme proposals for registration -- and versioned like
any other document (with a "time-stamped" URL and a
generic URL).
The documents will be generated by the DCMI Web Team
from raw XML data supplied by the DCMI Usage Board, and
the Web Team will be responsible for their maintenance.
Whenever these documents are re-generated from Usage Board
data, the resulting documents will therefore need to be
hand-edited to add forward references (Replaced by:) from
the earlier document to the later and backward references
(Replaces:) from the later document to the earlier,
as in the following:
Identifier : http://dublincore.org/documents/dcmi-type-vocabulary/
Replaces : http://dublincore.org/documents/2000/07/11/dcmi-type-vocabulary/
Replaced by: http://dublincore.org/documents/2003/01/31/dcmi-type-vocabulary/
