I think we have little choice but to provide middle grade cover 24/7 if we
are serious about providing quality emergency care. With the recent addition
of the Victoria Infirmary (Ian Anderson, immediate past-president of FAEM's
department) all 4 departments in Glasgow now have this, as do all the A&E
departments in Scotland with over 40,000 new patients p.a.
All use a combination of SpRs, staff grades, clinical fellows and SHOIII's
(experienced SHOs). If this is true about the RCS then I am actually pleased
as it will help achieve this goal in more departments.
