I'm not too au fait with the JHOs' induction Mick, but in our hospital I gather they get a half-day of lectures/orientation stuff, followed by a half-day of shadowing the house officer they will be replacing the following day. It's a very neat idea, a few hours is just enough for the new JHO to learn the "house rules" of his new firm, and to get an update on the inpatients coming under his care. This is one reason the Wednesday SHO changeover works so well, as it allows this JHO induction the day before.
Unfortunately this type of handover cannot be done in February as the "new" JHOs are finishing off their first six-month posts in other hospitals, so they only arrive along with all the other juniors on the Wednesday morning. Still it's more important for the August bunch, as they've just emerged from med school, and they value the protected induction very highly indeed.
