spreadsheets and SHO's with Band 2a are now on salaries of over £50K. I
couldn't beleive it I suppose it is a sign of my impending senility all that
I can say is that it is a hell of a lot of dosh.
But it's the mentality that bothers me, Danny. I don't mind the good ones
being well paid, as long as we eventually catch up in proportion. And what
AH did for them, perhaps Nizam can do for us in turn. But many of the new
breed are clock-watchers, they've no loyalty to the unit, and they don't
care what state they leave the department in, as long as it's the end of
their shift. They take sick leave at the drop of a hat, but never when
they're doing an extra shift for locum cash, or when they're taking their
study leave, which they normally try to maximise.
And this whole training-versus-service thing is getting out of hand. What's
wrong with some good old-fashioned service anyway? I was very happy to
provide it when I was a junior; after all, I was being paid a decent wage
and I'd had my five years in med school being relatively well supported by
society (my family background meant I was means-tested for a full grant in
those days). Maybe the modern breed are more resentful as so many have to
pay their own way and mount up huge debts, I don't know. But it's not
usually the ones with huge debts who cause the most problems; I generally
find they're the good workers. It's the ones who don't have to bother,
'cause they can coast on daddy's money or the boyfriend's money, that
usually take the piss.
Sorry, getting off the subject again, but DMcG drives me to it!
