Yes, Rocky, and I was one of those who supported it at the time - do you
remember the smoke rising from Strangeways Prison? And the drunken bag-lady
who abused the President of the CSA when he was reading the lesson at
Evensong in Manchester Cathedral - he was convinced she had been primed by
some dastardly Senior Registrars!!
If you recall, it was the 3rd attempt at changing the name from the CSA and
there were still some so entrenched in the past (rather than looking to the
future) that they walked out in high dudgeon and resigned from the
Association.
I hope we don't have the same depth of resistance this time around - we will
get only one bite at this particular cherry, in my view.

The name of BAEM connot be changed without a constitutional motion at the
AGM and a two-thirds majority. I assume the same is true for the Faculty
(OK, Adrian?). When the name was changed from the Casualty Surgeons'
Association, in 1990, I introduced an amendment that the "Accident and"
should be dropped, so that it would be the British Association for Emergency
Medicine. I think I got 13 votes out of about 100. It's not easy being a
prophet, I can tell you, but it's great that it now looks as though things
are starting to happen.
Cheers,
Rocky
