Dear Colleagues
From Caviar to Cornflakes: digitisation goes mainstream
A People's Network/Networked Services Policy Task Group workshop in
association with HEDS: Digitisation Services
Audience: aimed at staff in public libraries, local history units and
county archives whose responsbilities include electronic collections
management and development.
Date: Tuesday 11th March 2003
Duration: 1 day
Venue: Engineering Employers Federation, Broadway House, Tothill Street,
London SW1H 9NQ, Tel: 020 7222 7777, Fax: 020 7222 2782
Context: Public libraries are repositories of a multitude of resources:
local history and other special collections being one of the their great
strengths. The availablility of the People's Network now provides
opportunities to make these materials more widely accessible through
digitisation. This approach to service development needs to become an
integral part of the information delivery chain in public libraries and
is
an area in which skills and strategies need to be developed. Whilst it
may
seem that digitisation is an add-on "caviar" activity, and one with a
heavy
emphasis on complex and costly technology and cost, in reality
digitisation
has now entered the mainstream of activity. This event will demonstrate
means by which library staff can make digitisation a viable and
efficient
activity to deliver new access to information resources.
Aims: this seminar will
* explore the issues in digital content development
* discuss policies and strategies to be addressed
* give practical advice and guidance
The course directors: the seminar will be led by Simon Tanner, Senior
Consultant at HEDS.
