Ralph,
Yes, the quadrate is a separate bone. In really large specimens you might
find it fused to the preoperculum.

Subject: [ZOOARCH] catfish quadrates
Hell all,
Does the Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus) have a distinct quadrate? I
know that due to bone fusion the cranial anatomy is somewhat different from
other fishes. Is the quadrate fused to another bone like the preopercular or
hyomandibular? None of the sources I have make any mention of this so any
help
would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Ralph Koziarski
