Dear Lorrain,
Adrienne Powell has discussed the possibility of cock-fighting at
Pompeii in the following article:
Powell, A. 1995-96. Appendix 1: Bird bones and cremations, pp.102-5 in
Fulford M. and Wallace-Hadrill A. The House of Amarantus at Pompeii
(I,9,11-12): an interim report on survey and excavations in 1995-96,
pp.77-113. Rivista di Studi Pompeiani 7.
Cheers,
Umberto

> I'm looking for references to cock-fighting preferably Iron Age and
Roman. I am aware that Julius Caesar is recorded as having said that
the Britons kept fowl for pleasure and diversion, presumably he is
refering to cock-fighting. Have metal spurs similar to those from
later periods been recovered from Iron Age and Roman contexts? Have
pathological changes resulting from wearing metal spurs ever been
recorded on tarso-metatarsus from these period?

experimental work carried out on curring techniques and the resulting
bone evidence.
