What we are working towards, with colleagues in CETIS, is not some super application that does it all but rather an agreement on the structures that will enable your favourite system to work with your other favourite systems. Sure, we're not there yet as the JISC report mentioned further up this thread illustrates. But there are pockets of activity. Colleagues who are coming to Crewe on the 22nd Oct for the CETIS Enterprise SIG meeting will hear about one project using MS BizTalk as the "mediator" of the MLE. Taking the component model even further we are also anticipating the breaking apart of the VLE into components which may be provided by different vendors, leaving you to choose the tools that best suit your institution's strategy.
Small is beautiful.
