Anthony Smith Scholarship: M.Phil. in Rural Transport
Applications are invited for an M.Phil. Studentship in Rural Transport in
the Department of Geography and Environment, University of Aberdeen,
starting in the academic year 2003/2004:
This is a two-year studentship for home students worth £6,410.00 per annum,
which will cover maintenance, with the possibility of extension to a third
year and completion of a PhD, subject to successful completion of the first
year. The successful applicant will have a good first degree in Transport
Planning, Geography, Economics or another appropriate discipline. The
research topic will be in the field of Rural Transport and will be agreed
with the successful candidate. The research supervisor will be Professor
John Farrington, who has extensive experience of research in transport. The
research may involve an assessment of the present system of financing rural
transport (including conventional and community services). The successful
applicant would be expected to register for the degree of MPhil.

research proposal outline of up to 500 words on ‘Assessing the present
