A parcel arrived from Hiroshi Iwai today - the Japaness translation of the
Radstats book 'Statistics in Society' published in the UK in 1999.
Congratulations to the editors Danny Dorling and Ludi Simpson, and to all
those authors of individual chapters who may not until now know that they
have been translated into Japanese!
Will this count in the next RAE? How many points might be given?
It is a big book - a hundred pages longer than the English edition. They
have managed to translate the names of individual authors into Japanese. So
eurolingual-only authors would have to find their chaper by its number. The
charts and figures look very well done. Thought that the flow diagrams in
Pantazis and Gordon, for example, are rather neater than in the original
publication. The cartoons at the beginning of each Part have been
reproduced with translation of the wording.
A letter from Hiroshi Iwai lists the translators - Part 1 Jihei Kaneko,Yayoi
Sugashi. Part II Ichiro Uwafuji. Part III Koichi Sugimori, Toshio
Iwasaki. Part IV Toshio Fukushima, Hiiroshi Haga. Part V Mitsuo Fujioka.
Part VI Koichi Sugimori and Akio Kon. Part VII Hiroshi Iwai. Part VIII
Kohei Yosianaga.
There is a fine yellow dustcover with titles and editors names in English as
well as Japanese. But what to do with the book? Coffee table?
I reckon my guests would soon get bored. Is there a library that might
value the book?
