CRITERIA FOR THE AWARD OF THE J H WEST BURSARY
2004 will see the first award of the J H West bursary, which has been
established in memory of John Howard West, a chartered statistician and
fellow who died in 1998. The bursary of up to £1500 will be awarded every
two years to a young statistician for planned activities intended to develop
and exchange good practice between the UK and the developing world.
It is envisaged that the recipient of the award will be either a
statistician based in the UK and intending to carry out work in the
developing world, or a statistician based in the developing world and
intending to visit the UK.
The recipient need not be a member of the Society but the activities planned
must have some clear and firm connection with the Society, for example the
host of a visit could be a fellow or the meeting/conference attended
sponsored or organised by the Society.
The activities to be carried under this award can include an extended visit
to an academic or governmental department or other statistical organisation,
attendance at a conference or at a series of meetings. The activities for
which the bursary is awarded will need to be carried out within 18 months of
the award being made.
Applications
In a change to usual honours procedures, applications are sought from those
wishing to receive the bursary. Applications should include a detailed
account of how the applicant would intend to use the bursary and a shortened
highlighted CV should be attached. Applications will be considered by a
sub-committee of honours committee who will also be responsible for
monitoring the activities undertaken by the recipient under the terms of the
bursary.
Definitions
For the purposes of the J H West bursary the following definitions are used:
