Subject: [PSCI-COM] Colin Blakemore is new MRC chief
Colin Blakemore will take over from MRC Chief Executive George Radda in
October. http://www.biomedcentral.com/news/20030513/03
In Nature today Blakemore says that "he would like to see whether the
council can help to increase the credit that researchers get for taking part
in science communication. 'Young scientists need to get more professional
reward for these activities,' he says."

Colin was also written up in the FT.
This reported that Colin said:
his three priorities would be: communicating with the public and MRC
stakeholders; improving prospects for young scientists; and "ironing out the
fluctuations" in funds available for research grants.
Knowing Colin, I think we can safely assume that "communicating" is not just
him saying the usual guff.
On which, does anyone have any views on the communication that has come out
of the MRC in recent years? I hope that some of the tales of times past,
quite a long time past, when they said that they didn't like putting out
press releases because it ended up with telephone calls from journalists,
are history.
Until recently, the MRC has seemed to be the Teflon research council.
Nothing stuck to it, while all the other RCs can battered around the head
with edicts from the government and ever changing remits and boundaries. The
recent report from the House of Commons Select Committee on Science blew
that idea out of the water.
