Yes, Trevor, the play is everything, though I sound there
probably like I'm doing an idiot's rendition of a line from
Shakespeare. Well, I think one can say "I think your hand
is no good!" in virtual reality, as in poker. Though the
problem with poker (and of course I'm writing from the
Old West, which is not long gone in some parts anyway)
is when one calls someone "a cheater!" as one would say,
"them are fightin' words." Which is similar to the personal
attacks in virtual reality.
I am reminded of my father here, who was the one who
taught me how to play poker from an early age, since
he had been a professional gambler, and if someone had said
to him "your hand is no good," he would have smiled and
"you're going to have to pay to find out." Whatever one
says matters less than the coin one places on the table,
the "showing" of the hand. And I imagine, remembering
Mallarme's sense of the 'coinage' of the word
that something similar can and does happen
in virtual reality.
Best,
Rebecca
