Richard and John,
John, I agree with your comments about form being important in military products. Status, authority and strength are important cultural sensorial applications of design in military products.
Richard, I support whole heartedly your plan for the new design school and would like to see drawing in the curriculum, if not to the same extent as Art Center, RCA and CCS. I believe that it would be difficult to develop a pleasing form in a commercial setting without this tool.
There is more than one way to skin the design cat.
Design will gain strength through greater diversity. There is room for different cultures within design schools.
In a recent issue of Japanese Axis magazine an article stated that there are 386 design schools in China, all but 40 established in the last few years. This great emphasis on design must put pressure on global manufacturers in the future to work harder on design.
