Call for participation to the workshop
"Genres, Use Qualities, and Interactive Artifacts"
Organized by Jonas Lundberg, Mattias Arvola & Stefan Holmlid (Linköping
University, Sweden)
The workshop takes place at the HCI 2003 conference ( http://www.hci2003.org
) on September 9, 2003, in Bath, England.
This full day workshop will explore the idea Genre Analysis in terms of the
Use Qualities of interactive artifacts The desirable qualities of any
artifact in use are not completely unique to the problem it was designed to
address. There is overlap between similar artifacts within different genres.
The workshop will develop the idea that genres can structure knowledge about
the use qualities of artifacts. It seeks to provide transferability between
design examples within a repertoire, and hence to contribute to a reflective
practice for interaction designers.
The workshop will engage participants in two exercises to clarify the
concept of genre and quality attributes for interactive systems, followed by
an open discussion on the emergent themes which will be brought together as
a summary and poster for wider dissemination.
The most likely backgrounds of participants are researchers and designers of
interaction and information who are interested in synergies between areas of
practice. We will limit the number of participants to 20, but the minimum
number is 5. Selection will be made on a first-come first-served basis, but
should we be forced to select participants we will strive for creating a
balanced group so as to provide a creative and productive climate. That
selection will be based on a review of submitted position papers in which
attendees are expected to present their current understanding of the term
Genre and what they think it can mean in relation to the design of
interactive systems. You should also mention themes that you would like to
address in the workshop. Position papers should be no longer that 2 pages
and deadline is July 7. Notification of acceptance is July 10.
