Position Summary:
The Visual Communication discipline within the School of Art invites
candidates for this non-tenure eligible position beginning in August
2004. The department is seeking an individual who is able to work with
diverse students or colleagues, and who has experience with a variety
of teaching methods and curricular perspectives. This appointment is a
one-year position with the opportunity of renewal based on satisfactory
performance and funding availability. The University of Arizona is a
student centered research extensive institution, strongly committed to
educating professional artists at both the undergraduate and graduate
levels. The Visual Communication discipline includes Graphic Design,
Illustration and new media. Visual Communication has five faculty
members with diverse interests all contributing to a strong concept
based program. The sequence of courses fosters a balance between
theory, aesthetics, communication, critical thinking, crafting and
digital technology. The School of Art consists of more than 40 full
time faculty and numerous adjuncts in Studio, Art Education and Art
History. The undergraduate student majors number 900 with approximately
100 graduate majors. Tucson has an active arts community with three
significant art museums and numerous galleries and artist cooperatives.
Local theatre, opera, ballet, symphony and ethnic arts companies enrich
life in a splendid desert environment in close proximity to Mexico. The
climate and natural beauty of the area and the city's colorful history
and richly diverse culture combine to create a unique artistic
environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Teach undergraduate and graduate Visual Communication and Digital
Arts MFA Students.
• Initiate and explore high quality research and service in new media.
• Work in collaborative and interdisciplinary environments.
Minimum Qualifications:
• MFA in Visual Communication or an appropriate terminal degree.
• Strong design skills, dedication to creative research and
experience with developing interactive digital applications.
• Strong commitment to teaching undergraduate and graduate Visual
Communication students.
• Experience teaching at the university level.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Knowledge of contemporary design and new media history and theory.
• Experience in collaborative and interdisciplinary research
environments.
