again thanks Ken for the opportunity to share.

Russel Nelson
Industrial Designer

I find it unfortunate that design can be like a gun that goes off accidentally, and I think many good designers know this. Good design springs up from many sources not just designs that have worked for years to develop their ability and create wonderful projects. When designers work for this long a time they can learn a great deal but not everyone wants to learn what they have to contribute. Acceptance is a difficult word for some of us. When we work as a group we can define as a group examples of good design and why it is good design. Good design can spring from an individual or from a group, but we know what we like and why.

We live on one world that has a definition. We have been on this world for a long time, but what about the future. There may be no beings out there in space. I had the rare opportunity to meet Asimov once, and always space had seemed to be indefinable, yet our imagination never stops creating new ideas about what it contains. Asimov kept space alive. Can we as designers keep this world going a little bit longer. If we stand up together and support work that will keep us all going, and getting along better, then life might really become fun. To take responsibility for this idea we should think of good design and all it’s faces.

Education helps us. Designers all over the world understand what design is about, we have a language, a jargon that can earn us respect from any one who has chosen to study this line of work. We know a line, a curve, and texture that lies underneath our fingers. If we do not look after each other as human beings there may be no space for us to continue our work. The world may seem very big, but there are times when it can become very small and not exist at all. Good design needs to be watered every once and while and not forgotten.

Design can kill so let’s make a difference, we do need to help each other at times and this could easily be the time to take this into consideration. When good designers come knocking at our doors we can make a huge difference in their lives. We need to always remember our common interest and what has brought us together.

Good design manifests itself when we work in this direction. I have been following the conference and hope we can all get a great deal of good from this experience. We all might just look back at this moment in time and remember with detail how a leap was made and we were there to watch it happen. For me I have become aquatinted with new folks, with a common interest, design. Sometimes I wonder if I just have not talked enough about design and this needed to be an extra ingredient to the way I work. When I was in college some of my teachers put me down because of the way I spoke, but we had a common interest, design, and the more we were together working with design, we learned to accept each other more.

Does design make a different in the world, and will good design work with nature. If nature doesn’t survive then designers might not have the answer, and then man will look back and wonder how did I should myself in the foot? What should I have done? Will designers be help responsible and if so what penalty would we pay? Oh does that matter because if nature can’t exist does that mean that we disappear like the dinosaur. Do designers have to take these questions in their mind when they design. We don’t have to think about these things, maybe it’s not our job. But is their anything wrong with good design?
