If there is one lesson that we have learned over the last century I believe it is that the field of design lies between science, engineering, art, and anthropology. If we try to move design too far towards one of these fields under the influence of the skewed perceptions of people within those fields then it will become less successful. I believe that the Bauhaus placed too much emphasis on the manufacturability of products without always a good application of anthropology. Housing estates in England were amongst the highest crime areas in Europe, though good design if you were just considering efficiency of space and manufacturing. What engineering formula can produce desire?
