Dear Sara
I cant comment on the work post 82 although I have noticed it in my own
research..
I would however be interested in looking at your paper - I assume it follows
on from the work of Don Norman
I am part of a team looking at interactive product design in Cardiff - you
may have noticed some work by Steve Gill at various conferences over the
last 2 -3 yrs
If you could send a copy that would be great
Thanks
James

Is there a 4th generation?
or
What are everybody up to?
Hello everybody!
I am an industrial designer currently pursuing a PhD in Human machine
Interaction at KTH in Stockholm. Some of you might have met me at the EAD
conference in Barcelona recently where I presented a paper called: The
Dysfunctionality of everyday things.
Going through the literature on design theory I constantly read stories
about the Design Methodology Movement between 1962 and 1982 and how it is
divided in three generations. But after that the chronicles end. Are my
sources obsolete or does it not exist any movement, general overview or
significant work since -82? I have been flicking through some proceeding
from the last years (La Clusac, Common ground, EAD) but to tell you the
truth its very difficult to track any significant characteristics.
So my question is - What happened after 1982?
Have there been any shifts of interest, any arguments or groundbreaking
works?
All of the names I see on this list where part of the movement, what do you
nowadays?
In Barcelona, Wolfgang Jonas had a keynote called "Mind the gaps!". He
mentioned an argument he had with Ken Friedman regarding (if I understood
Wolfgang right) the foundations of design.
I never quite got what it was about but arguments are always exciting. So
can somebody (Wolfgang or Ken) tell me what that was about?
Hope to hear from you!
Regards
Sara Ilstedt Hjelm

Subject: Debate with Wolfgang Jonas
Dear Sara,
Your post reminds me that I've been slowly
preparing the rest of my theory notes... the full
thread runs several hundred pages of interesting
themes and issues, and I have been wrestling with
them for some months.
At one point, Wolfgang Jonas posted a few short
paragraphs outlining the topics of his EAD paper.
I noted that I would respond. Since then, I have
seen a partial draft of his EAD piece. It is most
interesting, but somewhat sketchy. I've asked
Jonas for a final draft before I respond.
Those who wish to see Jonas's original two essays
will find them on the Basic Paradox Web site at URL:
http://www.verhaag.net/basicparadox/
Go to the main page, then click on "Forum."
Jonas's two articles appear under
Wolfgang Jonas
On the Foundations of a "Science of the Artificial"
and
Wolfgang Jonas
The paradox endeavour to design a foundation for a groundless field
My response appears under
Ken Friedman
Problem and Paradox in Foundations of Design
If Jonas would like to post the final draft of his EAD
presentation when it is ready, I will be happy to respond.
Best regards,
Ken
