==========================================================
This is the first installment of news from the Carnegie Initiative on
the Doctorate (CID), a multi-year research and action project. Every
few months we will be sending a short email, like this one, to those who
signed up on the CID web site. In these announcements we will keep you
apprised of the latest developments of the Initiative.

32 Partner and 22 Allied Departments Selected
==========================================================
Responding to the Invitation for Participation issued last fall, nearly
100 departments from the fields of chemistry, education, English and
mathematics submitted letters of application to participate in the CID.
From this group, we selected 32 Partner departments and 22 Allied
departments that will participate in the project.
The departments have committed to deliberating about the purpose of
their doctoral program: articulating which aspects of the program are
working well, and which might be improved. By fall, departments will
begin to propose new strategies (design experiments) to include in their
program. Representatives from the Partner Departments will convene this
summer, by discipline, at the Foundation.
The list of Partner and Allied Departments is available:

Invitation for Participation in History and Neurosciences Issued
=================================================================
The final two disciplines that will join the CID are history and
neurosciences. The Invitation for Participation has been issued, and
letters of application are due by May 28th, 2003. The IFP and other
information about the application process is available:
