Call for Applications
The 2003 John Funk Research Fellowships
The Center for Research in Technology & Innovation at the Kellogg
School of Management of Northwestern University is pleased to
announce the John Funk Research Fellowships for Marketing Ph.D.
candidates at any accredited business school. These Fellowships are
supported with a gift from John Funk, a triple alumnus of
Northwestern University with degrees from the Weinberg College of
Arts & Sciences, the Kellogg School of Management, and the Law
School. John is the founder and CEO of Quris, Inc., an integrated

The Fellowship initiative is designed to advance research at the
nexus of Technology, Marketing and Innovation by providing financial
assistance to eligible Marketing Ph.D. students. Up to three (3)
Fellowships in the amount of $10,000 each will be awarded in the
2003-2004 academic year. The Fellowships are designed to add to
existing financial support that students may be receiving from their
department or school. All reasonable requests for research support
that complement the research interests of the Center will be
considered.
Eligibility: Eligibility for the Fellowships is limited to Ph.D.
students currently enrolled full-time at accredited research
universities, who are entering the focused research phase of their
Ph.D. programs. Applicants should have completed substantial portions
of their course work and should be starting work on their
dissertation research.
Evaluation Criteria: Applications will be evaluated based on the
record of past academic performance, current academic standing at the
institution and fit of the proposed dissertation research topic with
the Center's research priorities. Self-directed researchers with a
record of publication are encouraged to apply. The Center favors
research that:
* Focuses on the application of technology to improve the discipline
of marketing
* Is analytical in its methodological orientation
* Combines academic rigor with managerial relevance
* Makes original contributions to emerging areas of research, as
opposed to incremental contributions to established areas of research.
The research topics of interest to the Center include:
* Consumer behavior in online environments
* Consumer response models for direct and online marketing
* Integrated marketing communications
* Models and techniques for customer lifetime value measurement
* Technology-enabled customer relationship management
This list of topics is suggestive and not exhaustive. The Center
encourages applicants to propose any research topic that is original,
cross-functional, and relevant to the domain of technology-enabled
marketing. The Center also encourages applicants to draw on a wide
variety of functional disciplines, including (but not limited to)
Marketing, Organizational Behavior, Strategy, Information Technology,
Decision Sciences, Engineering, Economics, Sociology etc.
Applications will be evaluated by a Kellogg School faculty committee
appointed by the Center for Research in Technology & Innovation
Terms of the Award: Selected recipients of these fellowships will be
expected to write a publishable quality working paper that will
become part of the Center's working paper series. Award funds will be
distributed 50% in advance and 50% upon receipt of the completed
working paper. Working papers should be completed within twelve (12)
months of the award of the Fellowship.
How to Apply: Interested, eligible students should submit the
following to be considered for a Fellowship:
1. A one page cover letter summarizing qualifications for the award.
2. A current vita, with details of research publications and teaching
credentials.
3. A certified transcript of academic record and standing from the
home research institution.
4. A letter of nomination and support from the Primary Faculty
advisor for the dissertation research.
5. A statement of purpose not exceeding 2,000 words outlining the
proposed dissertation research. The statement should define the
research problem, suggest the method of addressing the research
problem, and speculate on the impact of the research.
The deadline for submitting applications is October 31, 2003.
Decisions with respect to all applications will be announced by the
end of November 2003.
