To clarify matters a litte, let me note that the clash of cultures that
I DO have some worries about, is different (as I think you recognized in
your post): it's the clash between those design professions whose
members were brought up to think of themselves primarily as artists, on
the one hand, and, on the other hand, the culture of design science and
design research that is evolving in the educational institutions of
those very same professions. Not least through the efforts of many
members of the community in which the present conference is taking place.
My background also included study of Civil Engineering, Archtecture and Industrial Design. The product designer who considers themselves an artist have never with few exceptions been very successful in industry in the USA. Although those leaning in that direction such as Phillipe Starck in Europe seem to have more success across the Atlantic.
You seem to agree in your last posting that a purely science and engineering training would not work for architecture. I would argue the same for product design.
