Two recent essays that address readability of typefaces are Hrant Papazian's
"Improving the Tool" and Rolf F. Rehe's "Legibility." Both appear in the
anthology *Graphic Design and Reading: Exploration of an Uneasy
Relationship,* edited by Gunnar Swanson (NY: Allworth Press, 2000). As I
recall, these essays focus on print rather than digital media, but the
footnotes to both would probably still be useful for your purposes.
