Visions of Possible Worlds. Scenarios and Proposals for Sustainability.

http://www.design.polimi.it/events

PAPERS ARE INVITED for the conference Visions of Possible Worlds.
Scenarios and proposals for sustainability. A new social role for
designers and design schools that will take place at the Triennale di
Milano on the 28th of November 2003.

The conference is promoted by the Faculty of Design at the INDACO
Department of the Politecnico di Milano and by the Triennale di
Milano, with the patronage of the United Nations Environment
Programme, Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (UNEP DTIE).

The transition towards sustainability is considered to be a process
of social innovation and shared visions of "what it could be like"
play an important role in its elaboration. In fact, though sometimes
contradictory, they act as catalysts for processes and events and
suggest common directions in which to look.

The conference Visions of Possible Worlds aims at contributing to the
generation of these shared visions on sustainability and of possible
ways of sustainable living.

Furthermore, it aims at clarifying and consolidate the role of
designers and design schools as potential facilitators for the
construction of shared visions, by promoting a network of schools of
design connected to the work of other operators involved in these
issues.

Considering the multidisciplinary nature of the themes involved,
papers are welcomed from a range of disciplinary approaches. They
should focus on "visions" of solutions and sustainable lifestyles:
images, scenarios and contextualised solutions that indicate what
daily life could be like in the transition towards sustainability.
These may either be the outcome of projects and research set up to
meet these specific aims, or have emerged as additional output from
activities with other objectives.

Each paper should present, and comment on, its "vision" from two
angles: firstly, from the point of view of the quality and
sustainability criteria it relates to; secondly, from the point of
view of the methodology used to obtain that vision.

The selected papers are to be written according to a set format which
will be communicated at a later date. This is both to simplify the
presentation and subsequent publishing procedure, and more
importantly, to aid the compilation of an understandable and easily
comparable collection of proposals.

Those who wish to present a paper at the conference should send an
abstract of no more than 1,500 characters (spaces included) and
supporting image in .jpg format by 1st October 2003 to the following
email address:
