Subject: Inquiry for International Research Advice
I am seeking to create an informal international cooperative research
group interested in design and global philanthropy.
I will be traveling in the following areas between June and September
2003. If you know of any organizations or people in these areas
(particularly in India) that may be able to assist me, I would greatly
appreciate your input.
June 7-18 Barcelona, Spain, where I am meeting with Design for the
World and visiting other design studios.
June 19-July 6 Paris, France and Domain de Boisbuchet in Charente
July 7- TBA central and southern India where I am still seeking contacts
with designers and Non-governmental organizations.
September 3-4 Cambridge, UK for the Second International Conference of
Design and Manufacture for Sustainable Development
I'm a graduate student in Industrial Design in New York. This research
is for completion of my thesis on what industrial designers can learn
from global philanthropy and strategic giving (views on globalization
and sustainability, organizational structure/management, altruistic
problem solving approaches, research and evaluation processes). Paired
with this, is an investigation of what designers might offer the
international giving community. My time in India will be researching
design opportunities surrounding the solid waste that results from
imported humanitarian aid. Specifically I will be looking at food,
medical aid, and shelter as products from a designer's viewpoint. I
want to document the ways materials are already being recycled in rural
and developing areas; where modern recycling technologies do not exist
(need-based, user-designed solutions). I will be looking at the
transport and delivery of aid, levels of nesting in packaging and
sustainability issues of the products delivered.
I am also looking for ways to continue this research by way of a PhD
program, Fulbright or Fellowship. Suggestions of programs or
opportunities is always welcome.
Many Many Thanks,
Joanna Clark
