Saying that the field of design should have or has a unique (as particular) point of view
is different from saying that ONLY the field of design should have or has a unique
point of view. (I don't believe that I have advanced the latter notion). I agree with John
(Feland – 24.3.03) that we will benefit from recognizing
both what is unique and what is common in design. I will add that it is as important to
recognize others’ uniqueness. These types of recognition, if done right, can help collaboration
among fields. I am with you on that.
AND
Seeking autonomy, to me, is NOT a sign of lacking in confidence. It is part of the process
and a characteristic of (true) identity development. As individuals, being autonomous
is a necessary condition that enables us to construct who we are and want to be –
to develop our values, goals and potentials as human beings. Autonomy in the development
of the design field is analogous.
