I should have given some background for those on the list who do not know me.
I have about 25 years of experience in the design of medical, consumer, business, military, sporting, computer, automotive products, seating and office systems. Over that time I have designed or managed the design of around 1000 products.I have undertaken design consultancy for manufacturers in Europe, Australia, Asia, Mexico and the United States, including, Dell, Hewlett Packard, NEC, Sun Microsystems, Bell & Howell, Philips, Nokia, Canon, Honeywell, Black & Decker, Motorola, Apple and Hoover.
I have worked as a designer, design manager and educator in Australasia, Europe, Middle East and the United States. I worked for companies including Philips, frog, Hauser design, was North American Design Manager at Haworth and Principal of Axis Design. I taught as a visiting instructor at Art Center Europe, San Jose, Canberra University, at Cranbrook Academy and was a staff instructor at Sydney College of the Arts (University of Technology Sydney). I am currently Professor and Chair of Product Design at The College for Creative Studies in Detroit, the (largest product design department in North America), and work as design consultant. The last bit you can get from my Signature.
...And also I like to stir the pot sometimes.

"It is generally noted in our interior program, our animation and game design programs that the students who can draw are the students who can learn to model. Other students just never quite meausure up."
I also have noticed that the most commercially successful products are often designed by people with good drawing skills. I think it may be because they have better 3d skills buried in their brain and are better able to communicate their ideas. A designer who can't draw is like a journalist who has bad grammar and spelling. Even if he has a good story, people will not take him(her) seriously. Ironically at CCS I am arguing most often for the course content which Richard is proposing at Irvine and for business and engineering input rather than drawing because the value of drawing was recognised here long ago.
