The conference is going very well and I want to thank all those who
are taking the time to share thoughts, questions, and comments. Once
again, I want to thank the speakers in our first sessions - Dick
Taylor, Thomas Rasmussen, John Feland, Sylvia Pizzocaro, and Chris
Rust.
During yesterday's lively exchange, we experienced a sudden surge in
list membership with some dozen new subscribers. In my experience,
that means people are finding the thread useful and informing their
friends and colleagues.
To repeat the answer to Naci's earlier question, everyone is welcome
to join. While we have done our best to inform people about the
conference, our members usually have the best idea of which friends
and colleagues ought to be invited. Once again, it is easy to
subscribe:

I have had a number of queries on subscription management from people
who want to shift from daily digest to one-at-a-time posts, and from
people who wish to move from one-at-a-time to daily digest.
I would like to make a mild correction to Glenn's note. I did not ask
that "lurkers identify themselves." I asked SPEAKERS to identify
themselves.
We have no "lurkers" here. People have different ways of
participating, and this list welcomes all.
With 1,200 members, PhD-Design serves many purposes. As the largest
and most active discussion list in design research, it serves as a
source of information and ideas. As a forum of debate and
conversation, it offers an opportunity to explore ideas and exchange
thoughts. As a meeting point for design scholars, professionals, and
researchers, it is a place to post research requests and a way to
locate colleagues. Teachers use the archive as an educational
resource and students use it as a learning center.
The list was established in 1998 and renewed in 2000 as a forum for
conversation on such themes as philosophies and theories of design,
foundations and methods of design research, the relationship between
practice and research in design, as well as a forum for discussions
on the form and structure of doctoral education in design.
This on-line conference is focusing on design in the university. We
are responding to a specific report by a group of expert designers.
We are also addressing general issues involved in the theme.
Please feel free to join in - if you have not posted, let us know who
you are. If you would rather read quietly, you are equally welcome.
Best regards,
Ken
