Impersonating Ken Friedman again, I have the dubious honour of sending
his introduction for me...
---
David Durling is director of the Advanced Research Institute at the
Staffordshire University Faculty of Art, Media, and Design. ARi has
strong research links with Humanities, and it serves as the locus of
the Center for European Philosophy, Art, and Design, an interuniversity
research center.
Dr. Durling is known to everyone on this list as chair of the Design
Research Society and as editor of Design Research News. He organized
and co-chaired the first world conference of DRS at Brunel last year,
and he will co-chair the Futureground Conference at Monash University
in Melbourne next year. As chair of the Design Research Society, Dr.
Durling has helped expand the leading design research organization in
Europe into what is now a global society with a steadily expanding
membership and a wide range of activities.
David Durling is an experienced professional designer who entered
design research to develop a deeper perspective on design practice. He
earned his Ph.D. with Prof. Nigel Cross at Open University. Since
entering academic life, he has become an internationally respected
scholar and researcher and a major figure in our field. He is a
consultant to university research programs in design and a doctoral
supervisor and external examiner. He was a member of the design panel
for the UK Research Assessment Exercise 2001 and is a member of the
editorial board of the journal Design Studies.
It is no secret that I enjoy working with David Durling. There are many
reasons for this. For one, he possesses a direct, focused manner
combining diplomacy and tact. For another, his thoughtful, calm
demeanor hides a wicked sense of humor. My wife likes him, too, since
he is the inspiration behind my new, short haircut.
It is a pleasure to welcome David Durling's response.
Welcome, David!
