Michael P. Clark is Associate Executive Vice Chancellor for
Academic Planning at the University of California, Irvine. Dr.
Clark is also Professor of English and Comparative Literature.
He works in two fields that shape an interesting juxtaposition:
early American Literature and post-modern literary theory. His
books include Jacques Lacan: An Annotated Bibliography Michel
Foucault: Tool Kit for a New Age as well as a collection of
essays for University of California Press titled Revenge of the
Aesthetic: The Place of Literature in Theory Today. His next
book will focus on Puritan sermons from Colonial New England.
As AEVC, Prof. Clark is responsible for working with groups of
faculty who develop proposals for the large-scale,
multi-disciplinary initiatives that cut across institutional
boundaries. The proposal for the new design school at UCI is
such a project.
Entering into dialogue with Mike Clark is an adventure. Mike is
a chancellor who remains a professor in every sense. Mike's
mission is informed by deep dedication to the university as a
center of inquiry. This quest is not metaphorical: Mike is
building the university he wants to work in. The fact that he
continues to research, write, and publish demonstrates a
passionate commitment to scholarship. The normal schedule of an
AEVC does not include a research remission - Mike makes the time
for the work he loves. This is a good foundation for the work of
an EAVC.
Prof. Clark has served on the editorial board of Early American
Literature and he is the Webmaster for the Society of Early
Americanists.
It is a pleasure to welcome Dr. Clark to our on-line conference.
Welcome, Mike!
