Hi,
I teach in a Design Studies programme within a Science Division at a
fairly conservative university. I am also one of only two staff
capable of PhD supervision. I am seeking information about the way
similar programmes regard the practice component of both Masters and
PhD programmes.
I would like to hear of strategies adopted to achieve recognition of a
practice component within Masters and PhD structures. Because of the
nature of our programme (we are not an immersion design school and our
aim is to encourage reflective practice), we would always require a
significant written component. I wish to make a case for a candidate to
nominate up to 50% as a practice component of their thesis (thereby
correspondingly reducing word limit of thesis - currently set at 40,000
words). I would also be interested to know how this is handled with
regards to external examiners.
