Paulo Freire writes of generative themes in Pedagogy of the
Oppressed. Broadly speaking, generative themes refer to initial
biases, experiences, and opinions that must, ulitmatley, be
reconciled with knowledge from outside the self. This is part of his
dialectics as teaching method.
His philosophy seems to be echoed in responses to the list on
this issue. Specifically the limitations of a priori premises and/or
assertions on idea generation and the creative process in
general. Though Freire doesn't speak of the creative process, his
dialictical methods eschew hypotheses for an inductive method
beginning with emperical observations of one's environment to
differentiation among member's views of that environment to
comparisons between societies and finally to universal themes--
totality-- and back to the beginning again.
