A 3-year research studentship is available to study for a Ph D in
Jeremy Hutson's research group in Durham, England. The project is
on the properties of cold and ultracold molecules, and especially
ultracold molecular collisions. Methods for producing cold molecules
experimentally are starting to emerge (molecular beam deceleration,
buffer-gas cooling, photoassociation of ultracold atoms, etc.).
However, very little is known about the interactions between ultracold
molecules and the outcomes of collisions between them, and these are
crucial in developing methods to trap cold molecules and eventually to
achieve molecular Bose-Einstein condensation. The successful applicant
for this position will be involved in developing intermolecular
potentials for interactions of cold molecules and carrying out collision
calculations on the resulting surfaces. The theoretical work will
underpin experimental developments in this fast-developing field.
Applicants should have a degree in either Chemistry or Physics and an
interest in quantum mechanics. The work will involve both running
existing computer programs and developing new ones, so an interest in
and aptitude for computational work is also required.
The position is funded by the EPSRC (the UK Engineering and Physical
Sciences Research Council). For a UK resident, the studentship will cover
both fees and an allowance for living expenses. [For this purpose,
residence does not require UK nationality, but the student must have been
living in the UK for at least 3 years, for purposes other than receiving
education.] Non-UK European Union residents are also eligible for the
studentship, but in this case the award would be for fees only, and the
the student would have to find another source for living expenses.
[No, I don't like this either, but those are the rules.]
The Chemistry Department at Durham is one of only 6 in the UK graded 5*
(the highest grade available) in the national Research Assessment
Exercise in 2001. Theoretical Chemistry is one of the Department's
particular strengths. Further information on the Chemistry Department
at Durham is available at

Further information on Jeremy Hutson's research group is available at

There is no fixed closing date for applications. Applications will
continue to be considered until the position is filled.
