Gert Due Billing
Gert Due Billing died at his residence in Copenhagen on December 4, 2002
after a period of prolonged illness. Gert, aged 56, was Professor of
Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen.
He was a recognized expert in the field of theoretical
and computational chemistry and a world leader in semi-classical
theories. Gert has applied the techniques he developed - semi-classical,
algebraic and MCTDH methods, wave packet calculations, and Bloch operator
formalisms to problems in such diverse areas as energy transfer and
reactive scattering in atomic and molecular collisions and clusters,
molecular dynamics study on solid surfaces, non-adiabatic collisions,
photodissociation, resonances, and electronic structure calculations.
Gert's main contribution is undoubtly the developments of new
semi-classical theories and methodologies for handling large dynamical
problems. The progress he achieved in the last few years using
multitrajectory and Hermite corrections and the time-dependent discrete
variable representation are certainly the climax of his research,
a testament which is published in his latest book "The Quantum Classical
Theory".
Gert was an affable and kind personality, with whom it was a pleasure
to collaborate. He will be remembered by his colleagues and
friends for his vision, dedication, and his warm hospitality.
Gert will be dearly missed.
We send our deepest sympathy and offer our most sincere condolences to
his family.
