I found a slightly complicated genealogy for these pits-1,2 and 3 sunk
in the 1870's--shafts 1,2,3 and a number 4 for pumping-changed hands a few
times becoming owned by the Wharncliffe Woodmoor Colliery Co. Ltd. in 1883 and
eventually closed in 1966.
4 and 5 sunk in 1873 by a totally different and larger concern were
originally known as Carlton Main and closed in 1910 but were taken over by the
Wharncliffe
Woodmoor Colliery Co. Ltd. in 1924 and re-named Wharncliffe Woodmoor 4&5
eventually closing in 1970.
Both pits, located to west & east of the village of Carlton employed
over 1,000
men each in the 50's and 60's.
There was also a Wharncliffe Silkstone Colliery which also closed in 1966.
Nice names.
Best wishes,Andrew Santer
