Mike,
I like the suggested title. But, there is serious interest in the last 20
years of the coal industry, its declining fortunes and the associated
political struggle - see the recent posting re. the forthcoming conference
(Twenty Years On! The Great Miners Strike in Historical and International
Perspective - Saturday November 1st 2003, Institute of Historical Research,
Malet St, London). In coal mining terms, I get more enquiries about the
Miner's Strike of 1984 than any other subject.
As to the Coal Authority and metal mining - their approach to the subject of
accessing resources appears to be that if they are going to use their skills
on coal then they might as well apply them to the full range of historic
mining activity. They will, I am sure, lead on coal. Metal mining should not
in itself be a problem - although some stratified iron mining falls within
their remit, I am assured that the ABMH project will be operated outside the
area of their statutory obligations.
