I have been watching this correspondence with interest. What dimensions were the containers for explosives?
A friend has shown us a small steel pot which belonged to her g.g.uncle who was a mining captain in St. Agnes (Cornwall) and then at the Mexico silver mines. We haven't worked out what it is - it is about 5 cm high, 4 cm in diameter and has a spring lodaded lid, and is air tight. It has a belt carrier. We wondered if it was for tobacco, or fuse.
I have recently acquired a similar pot from a car boot sale, but it is more recent, I should think, and is not so well made. The lid isn't spring loaded lid and it doesn't have a belt carrier, and has a number punched into the lid. We wondered if this had been for mining tokens of some sort.
Any suggestions??
Thanks.
