Cotswold roof tiles (oolitic limestone) are also referred to locally as Cotswold stone 'slates'.
The sizes on a hand written sheet I have, written down by a retired roofer in this area, are as
below. The second (or only) number is the actual length in inches. I believe these give us the
overlap between rows of slates (ie Long 15 at 22 inches gives 7 inches overlap)
They don't seem to worry about the width like a (slate) slate tile. As you can see from the list
there are many more names than anyone else on the list has come up with so far!
Name of Tile Actual length
Long 16 24
Short 16 23
Long 15 22
Short 15 21
Long 14 20
Short 14 19
No 13 Superstitious - not used
Long 12 18
Short 12 17
Long 11 16
Short 11 15
Whippets 14
Short whippets 13.5
Long G 13
Short G 12.5
Batchlors 12
Short Batchlors 11.5
Long Beck 11
Middle Beck 10.5
Short Beck 10
Muffetay 9.5
Cutting 9
Short Cutting 8.5
Long Cock 8
Middle Cock 7.5
Short Cock 7
All Up 6.5
I can't imagine the origin of some of these names!
At the bottom of the page, there is a rule stick with various different markings along it,
signifying the different sizes.
