In Angerstein's travel diary recently published by the Science Museum is a drawing of a Newcomen engine-house where the beam comes through a side wall instead of the gable end. The drawing was made in the 1750's in the Wolverhampton area.

As with the recent message on Insurance, the merger of caving groups is not a matter for discussion on this list - please direct any comments to the author of the messages.

See "The Steam Engine of Thomas Newcomen" by Rolt and Allen, pub. Moorland 1977 for drawing and photos, or visit the real thing.
Regards, Simon.
