The total number of 'men on books'for the coal mining industry can be
extracted from the Mines inspector's Reports, Inspection District by
District and totalled. This gives:-
1947 - 718,849. 1948 - 726,239. 1949 - 708,957. 1950 - 690,165. 1951
- 698,095. 1952 - 715,677. 1953 - 710,090. 1954 - 705,629. 1955 -
700,577. 1956 - 704,109. 1957 - 710,137. 1958 - 679,482. 1959 -
633,152. 1960 - 585,145. 1961 - 562,947. 1962 - 534,904. 1963 -
513,653. 1964 - 485,948. 1965 - 447,582. 1966 - 415,181. 1967 -
380,255. 1968 - 326,091. 1969 - 300,172. 1970 - 273,453.
Interestingly, the highest figure in this list was 1948, not 1952. These
figures were extracted quite a few years ago and I couldn't now comment
on their accuracy, nor what they include or exclude, but, with a lack of
other information, they might be of some interest.
Barry Job.

Subject: FW: Total Employment Figures
I note that a previous request was made, in 2001, for total number of
BCC employees between 1947 and June 1994. I have followed the advice
given at the time but have still been unable to extrapolate the relevant
figures. Can anyone assist? In particular my research paper needs the
numbers at nationalisation, at it's peak (which I believe to be 1952)
and at time of privatisation. All input much appreciated
