The SGMRG now have some info available on the www. It is at
http://www.southglos.gov.uk/acrobat/sgMinesRG.pdf
This is an information sheet to tell people about our new group; we hope to have a good website up
and running sometime in the (hopefully not too distant) future.
On Saturday 13 September, there will be an Open Day at Oldwood Pit, a late 19th century coalmine,
between Yate and Rangeworthy. Admission is FREE as it is part of the Heritage Open Days in South
Gloucestershire. We will be doing regular guided tours - there is quite a bit to see, but
unfortunately nowhere near as much as at some other sites. One 'highlight' of the tour is the
vertical shaft at the end of the tour; you can also see an adit entrance which is currently being
restored with materials donated by Hanson's quarries. Further details of the open day at end of
email.
At Oldwood there will also be an exhibition all about mining in S Glos. The info sheet on the
webpage above lists the main mining that went on in S Glos; there was a lot more than most people
think! Not just coal mines, but silver, lead and celestite and more . . . The exhibition is
currently on display in Yate Heritage Centre (until 6 September). The YHC is open on Tuesdays,
Thursdays and Saturdays and its free. From memory the opening times are 10:300 to 16:00; its in
Church Road, Yate between the pub and the church. Incidentally a lot of the information boards are
paid for with a generous donation we have received from Hanson.
All the best for now
