In the 1760-1800 period, the Ecton Copper Mine in N Staffs used ash and oak.
The mine's coal mine used postwood (pit props) from the same wood at one
point and therefore oak and ash may be assumed for Hazles Cross Colliery in
the Cheadle Coalfield. There is no note of sweet chestnut being used. The
only other timber in use was alder (for smelting and possibly ladder poles).
