The CILIP Free Programme: 'Knowledge, information and technology:
making the connection.'

Mark Field, Information and Knowledge Manager for the Chartered
Institute of Library and Information Professionals, today released
the first view of the CILIP Free Programme at Knowledge Management
Europe 2003 at the RAI Exhibition and Congress Centre in Amsterdam.

Following the fairly loose theme of 'People and Technology: getting
the mix right' this programme will be ideal for anyone who is
interested in the links between information management and knowledge
management: how do they connect, and what are the cross-benefits? How
has knowledge management influenced practise in information
management? What established information management practices has
knowledge management taken from information management, and how have
they been applied?

This programme features a mix of presentations and workshops that
will provide insight into new developments and emerging practise in
information management which supports better knowledge sharing and
discovery. They are open to any delegate attending KME 2003.
Registration for the exhibition, most of the conference and the CILIP
Programme is free, and it is possible to keep travel and
accommodation costs below £200. KME is Europe's largest and most
influential knowledge management event.

'Knowledge Agents at the Dstl'
Dstl - the UK's Defence Science and Technology Laboratory - is a
recently created multi-site research, development and advisory
organisation. Its Knowledge Services Department has to meet the
information needs of Dstl's 3,200 staff, and has had to create a new
structure and philosophy to identify and meet those needs. In
addition, Knowledge Services has the lead responsibility for Dstl's
knowledge management programme, in which the most effective tool
introduced so far has been the team of Knowledge Agents: Chris will
explain how this new role works and the range of benefits Kas have

Usage of the term "community of practice" has been characterised, at
turns, by hype, managerialism, conceptual drift, commercial
exploitation and - almost religious fervour. What precisely does
Wenger mean by the idea? Is it really an appropriate ideal for social
configurations to support knowledge sharing or creation? Or should we
look more to looser knit networks of practice to support
collaboration?
