REFWORKS PRODUCT UPDATE
January, 2003
Version 3.0 Release / Codie Award Nomination
RefWorks, the Web-based personal bibliographic management service,
released its new Version 3.0 in December, providing users with a number
of new functions detailed below. These enhancements to the service are
provided at no additional fee and are automatically available to users.
SEARCH ONLINE DATABASES
The "Search Online Databases" function now allows users to search a wide
variety of database resources using the RefWorks search interface. This
enhancement also simplifies downloading records from outside sources
into RefWorks.
This new function is accessible on the main RefWorks page by clicking on
"Search Online Databases" in the Search Tools box. Presently, RefWorks
users can use this function to search and retrieve records from PubMed
and a variety of Z39.50-compatible resources.
ACCESS TO PUBMED
RefWorks users can use the RefWorks search interface to search PubMed.
PubMed provides access to bibliographic information, primarily from the
MEDLINE database. It also provides:
*out-of-scope citations from certain MEDLINE journals, primarily general
science and chemistry journals, for which the life sciences articles are
indexed for MEDLINE
*citations that precede the date that a journal was selected for MEDLINE
indexing
*some additional life science journals that submit full text to PubMed
Central and receive a qualitative review by NLM.
ACCESS TO Z39.50-COMPATIBLE RESOURCES
A number of public and subscription-based Z39.50-compatible resources
are now accessible through the RefWorks Search Online Databases
function; additional sites will be added regularly. All RefWorks users
will have access to the public resources on the list; an institution
must be a subscriber in order for the user to have access to the
subscription-based services.
Libraries wishing to have their Z39.50-compatible database services
and/or catalog added to the list can send a request via the RefWorks
site.
