APOLOGIES FOR CROSS-POSTING
ISABEL
Date: Tuesday 13 May 2003
Time: 6.30 pm
Venue: The Sekforde Arms, Sekforde Street, London EC1
Speaker: Jason Maude, Managing Director of Fulcrum Research Ltd
and co-founding trustee of ISABEL
Jason Maude will explain how the Isabel Medical Charity developed
its keyword-based decision-support software for checking
diagnoses. It is a unique paediatric database allowing doctors to
enter search terms which, through a knowledge-management system,
allows them to reach a starting-point for diagnosing symptoms.
Possible diagnoses are supported by textbooks, visuals, articles
and links to drug references.
Jason will explain how the project came into being after his
daughter, Isabel, was rushed to hospital under police escort and
spent four weeks on a life-support machine, following a doctor's
mis-diagnosis of chicken pox.
He will tell the story of how ISABEL started, which is essentially
how a mistake made with his daughter Isabel illustrated the
systemic problem in the way health care is delivered. The problem
is one of an inverted pyramid of knowledge. The most experienced
and wisest physicians are furthest away from the patient while
those who first assess patients, such as junior doctors and GPs,
have least experience. ISABEL's aim was to invert the knowledge
pyramid and furnish those doctors at the front line with useful
and relevant clinical knowledge at the bedside. The system now has
9000 doctors using it and is used in daily practice by many
hospitals.
ISABEL was a 2002 winner of the British Computer Society's IT
Award, and was runner-up for the Best Example of Technological
Innovation at the Best Use of IT in the Health Service Awards
2003.
